When Does Morning Sickness Start?

July 16, 2016

One of the most discussed topics about pregnancy is morning sickness. We’ve seen it referenced in tons of movies and tv shows. It usually accompanies a woman finding out she’s pregnant. But, are these pop-culture references really accurate? When do women typically start experiencing morning sickness?

Contrary to popular belief, most women don’t start feeling woozy and green until halfway through their first trimester. Morning sickness typically rears its ugly head around six to eight weeks. It’s not very common — almost unheard of even, to experience morning sickness before week six, and typically it won’t start after week 14 either. But, if you feel yourself getting queasy at any time, you can typically blame that on your pregnancy. Many women experience morning sickness… at night or any other time after the morning.

How Soon Into the Pregnancy Does Morning Sickness Begin?

For many pregnant ladies, the eighth week is when the hormone that makes the placenta (human chorionic gonadotropin) and estrogen really kick into high gear. Some moms can handle the rapid change of hormones quite easily, while most start to feel sick. Quick and abrupt changes in your hormone levels cause your body to experience an array of side effects, one of which is nausea. The change in hormone levels may also cause heartburn.
