Annual gynecological care is an essential part of maintaining health for women at every stage of life. Refer to our guide to the annual wellness exams and appointments adult women aged 18–85 should prioritize with their GYN:

Ages 18–21:

  • Annual Wellness Exams: Focus on general reproductive health, menstrual cycle management, and contraception if needed. Pap smear begins at age 21.
  • STD Screenings: Based on sexual activity and risk factors.

Ages 21–29:

  • Annual Wellness Exams: Includes pelvic exams, breast health discussions, and preventive care.
  • Pap Smears: Every 3 years (ages 21–29) if results are normal.
  • STD Screenings: Based on individual risk.

Ages 30–39:

  • Annual Wellness Exams: Includes breast health, pelvic exams, and discussions on fertility or family planning.
  • Pap Smear + HPV Co-testing: Every 5 years if results are normal.
  • Mammograms: Start at age 40 unless higher risk factors are present.

Ages 40–49:

  • Annual Wellness Exams: Focus on managing perimenopause, menstrual irregularities, and preventive care.
  • Pap Smear + HPV Co-testing: Every 5 years if results are normal (or Pap alone every 3 years).
  • Mammograms: Annually starting at 40.

Ages 50–64:

  • Annual Wellness Exams: Includes menopause management, bone health discussions, and cardiovascular risk assessment.
  • Pap Smear + HPV Co-testing: Continue screenings every 5 years until age 65 if previous results were normal.
  • Mammograms: Annually or biannually based on risk factors.

Ages 65–85:

  • Annual Wellness Exams: Focus shifts to post-menopausal care, pelvic organ health, and overall wellness.
  • Pap Smears: Discontinue after 65 if you’ve had three consecutive normal results in the last 10 years and no history of cervical cancer.
  • Mammograms: Continue until at least 75, based on health and risk factors.
