What to Expect at Your Annual Exam (and Why It’s Not Just a Pap Smear)

July 8, 2025

When you hear “annual exam,” you might immediately think “Pap smear.” But while that may be part of your visit, there’s much more to your well-woman exam than a single screening.

At GYNWC of Lakewood Ranch, your annual exam is a cornerstone of your long-term health—a chance to stay proactive, ask questions, and build a relationship with your provider. Here’s what you should know about what happens at this important visit—and why you shouldn’t skip it.

What Is a Well-Woman Exam?

Your annual GYN visit is a comprehensive check-in for your reproductive and overall health. It’s tailored to your age, lifestyle, and any concerns you may have. It may include:

  • A general health review (weight, blood pressure, medical history)
  • Breast exam
  • Pelvic exam
  • Pap smear (if due)
  • Contraceptive counseling
  • STI testing (if needed)
  • Menstrual health discussion
  • Questions about mood, libido, sleep, or pain
  • Updates on vaccines, like HPV

So… What Exactly Is a Pap Smear?

A Pap smear is a test that screens for cervical cancer. During a pelvic exam, your provider collects a small sample of cells from your cervix to check for abnormalities. It’s quick, usually painless, and extremely important—but not needed at every visit.

How often do I need a Pap smear?

  • Starting at age 21
  • Every 3–5 years depending on your age, results, and whether you’ve had HPV testing
  • You may still need an annual pelvic exam, even if you’re not due for a Pap

Why Come In If I’m Feeling Fine?

Preventive care is about catching issues before they become problems. Even if you’re feeling healthy, your provider can help you:

  • Track changes in your cycle
  • Discuss unusual symptoms (like pain, discharge, or mood changes)
  • Stay current with screenings and vaccinations
  • Get birth control advice or preconception counseling
  • Manage menopause symptoms

Let’s Talk About What Matters to You

One of the most valuable parts of your annual exam is the opportunity to ask anything—no judgment, no rush. From sex and stress to sleep and skin, your provider is here to listen and guide.

Questions you might bring:

  • Are my periods normal?
  • What are my birth control options?
  • Should I get tested for STIs?
  • I’m feeling tired/anxious/moody—could it be hormonal?
  • Is it normal to feel pain during sex?

Don’t Delay Your Health

Your annual exam is about more than checking a box—it’s a personalized look at your total wellness. Whether you’re 21 or 61, it’s one of the most important appointments you can keep each year.
