What is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder?

January 18, 2022

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is similar to PMS but causes more severe symptoms. These symptoms become noticeable one to two weeks before a period begins. PMDD affects up to 10% of women who get periods. Those with anxiety, depression, PMS or a family history of PMS or PMDD may be more prone to experiencing PMDD.

Symptoms:

  • Irritability/anger
  • Anxiety
  • Sadness
  • Mood swings
  • Low energy
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Loss of interest in activities

These are just some of the symptoms of PMDD. Physical symptoms can include cramps, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, and muscle pain.

The cause of PMDD is unknown, but experts believe it is due to the hormone fluctuations that occur after ovulation and before menstruation. Serotonin level changes throughout the menstrual cycle may also contribute to PMDD.

Treatment Options:

Talk to your doctor about any symptoms you are experiencing. It is helpful to keep a journal to track your symptoms as well. Your doctor may prescribe birth control pills or antidepressants to manage symptoms. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with muscle aches and cramps. Your doctor may also provide techniques for stress management. Making general lifestyle changes, like eating healthier and exercising regularly, can also help with overall health and wellness.
