A urogynecologist is an obstetrician or gynecologist who has also completed specialized training in the care and treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders. The pelvic floor is a term used to describe the many muscles, nerves, and ligaments that support the vagina, uterus, bladder, and rectum.
What is PVD?
Pelvic floor dysfunction (PVD) can affect the quality of life for women of all ages and make daily living tasks difficult and sometimes embarrassing if there are incontinence issues. Surgery, childbirth, and other disorders can sometimes affect the functioning of the pelvic floor leading to bladder and incontinence issues, as well as bulging of the organs in the pelvic area.
Symptoms of PVD may include:
– Increased urgency or frequency of bladder or bowel movements
– Urinary incontinence
– Constipation or pain with bowel movements
– Pain in the pelvic region, genital area, or rectum
– Painful intercourse
Common Urogynecology Disorders
Urinary and Fecal Incontinence – The inability to control functions of the bladder or bowels can cause distress and restrict normal daily living tasks. Stress urinary incontinence causes urine leakage during activities or motions that put pressure on the bladder, such as sneezing or laughing. Urge incontinence is also known as overactive bladder and creates a strong urgency to urinate. It may occur with or without urine leakage.
Pelvic Organ Prolapse – This occurs when the pelvic floor muscles are so weak that they allow organs such as the bladder, bowel, or uterus to prolapse (or fall) into the vagina. It can cause varying levels of pain or discomfort depending on the severity. Treatment may or may not be necessary depending on how much how quality of life is affected by the condition and its symptoms.
There are a number of other conditions that can be caused by urogynecology disorders and pelvic organ prolapse. It is important to have an evaluation with a specialist to determine if treatment is necessary.
