Incontinence and bladder control problems can affect both women and men and cause embarrassing and uncomfortable situations when out in public. Learn more about incontinence and tips for preventing bladder control problems.
There are two types of incontinence: stress and urge. Stress incontinence usually occurs when coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercising. This can be caused by physical changes due to aging or pregnancy. Urge incontinence is more of a loss of control of the bladder and is also referred to as overactive bladder. This can be caused by a variety of health issues, like a stroke or pinched nerve.
Here are some tips for preventing bladder control problems:
- Do your kegels every day. Pelvic floor exercises keep those muscles strong.
- Keep your weight in check. Higher BMI can increase risk of incontinence.
- Drink enough water – but not too much where you find yourself running to the bathroom more.
- Cut back on caffeine and alcohol, which are diuretics.
- Cut back on acidic drinks, which can be irritating to the bladder.
- Make sure you’re getting enough magnesium.
- Quit smoking! There are many, many health reasons to quit smoking, and one of them is it can also be irritating to the bladder.
- Make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin D.
- Eat an overall healthy diet.
- Don’t hold it in. Sometimes the urge can come at an inconvenient time, but try to go as soon as you can. This may mean having to scope out exactly where the nearest bathroom is!
