Do I Need to Have a Period Each Month?

November 19, 2015

In the past, a skipped period was a sign of pregnancy or menopause. However, thanks to the development of oral contraceptives, women can take control of their menstrual cycles and choose to avoid that time of the month. While most women menstruate 13 times each year, oral contraceptives have been approved to extend the length of the menstrual cycle so that you get your period just four times a year. That’s just every three months. But is having your period every three months healthy? Learn more below.

Are There Health Benefits to Skipping Periods?

The short answer is yes. Those same months when you don’t get your period, you won’t have to deal with annoying PMS symptoms either. You get to avoid the headaches, cramps and mood swings that typically occur for two weeks out of the month. Missing your period also means you’ll be at lower risk for anemia and endometriosis. Research also shows that taking oral contraceptives may reduce the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer.

Is it Safe to Skip Periods?

Many doctors say yes. Women who are on birth control don’t experience true periods anyway. Rather, what happens is when they take the placebo pills, their bodies go into hormone withdrawal, which triggers the bleeding. There is no reason other than cultural that a woman who is on the pill has to bleed each month. Furthermore, oral contraceptives for menstrual suppression typically have a lower overall hormonal dosage than the amount contained in the leading oral contraceptives and, therefore, may be safer.

Research has shown that the majority of women would skip their period if it were safe to do, but some women will always want the monthly proof that they aren’t pregnant. Like any personal choice, it’s up to you to decide what’s best for you and your body.
