October 1, 2015

Pregnancy can be an exciting time. However, experts estimate that approximately 10 to 20 percent of women experience depression symptoms during pregnancy. Here are some of the ways depression can harm a woman and her unborn baby.

Pregnancy Complications

Women who are depressed are less likely to receive prenatal care, which is essential for a healthy pregnancy. A lack of prenatal care can put a woman at risk for having a miscarriage. Women who do not receive the proper attention also more likely to deliver prematurely.

Postpartum Depression | Post Pregnancy Depression

Depression during pregnancy can lead to postpartum depression. This stage of depression after the baby is born can last for several months and can affect how well the mother bonds with her baby. Babies whose mothers have postpartum depression are also more likely to have behavioral issues as they get older.

Childhood Depression

Babies born to mothers who experienced depression during pregnancy are more likely to develop depression later in life. According to a study done by researchers at the University of Bristol in the U.K, people whose mothers experienced depression during pregnancy are 1.5 times more likely to develop depression before the age of 18.
