10 Things You Can Do Right Now To Improve Your Mental Health

May 21, 2024

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, now is the perfect time to cover some ways to improve your mental health.  At times in our lives, it may be necessary to pause and prioritize our mental well-being.  It is important to pay attention to our body and mind when we are not feeling our best.  When you’re not feeling your best, try one of the following tips to see if it helps improve your mental health.

Take Deep Breaths

Pause what you’re doing and take a few deep, slow breaths. This simple exercise can reduce stress and anxiety almost instantly. Try inhaling deeply through your nose, holding for a few seconds, and exhaling slowly through your mouth.

Go For A Walk

Getting some physical activity, even just taking a short walk, helps clear your mind and improve your mood. If you can, try stepping outside and taking a 10-15 minute walk in nature. The change of scenery and fresh air can work wonders.

Reach Out To A Friend

Call, text, or message a friend or family member. Social interaction can provide emotional support and help you feel more connected. Even a brief conversation can lift your spirits.

Practice Gratitude

Reflect on three things you are grateful for. Write them down or simply think about them. Focusing on the positive aspects of your life can improve your mood and perspective.

Listen To Music

Put on your favorite music or listen to a song that makes you feel good. Music can have a powerful effect on your emotions and can quickly elevate your mood. If you feel the music start to move you, act on it, and take a dance break – this will help lift your spirits.

Drink A Glass Of Water

Hydration is crucial for overall health, including mental well-being. Drinking a glass of water can refresh your body and mind. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and negatively impact your mood.

Do A Quick Exercise

Engage in quick physical exercises, such as stretching, jumping jacks, yoga, or taking a dance break. Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters.

Disconnect From Screens

Take a break from your phone, computer, tablet, and the television. Spend a few minutes away from screens to reduce eye strain and mental fatigue. Use this time to relax or engage in an offline activity you enjoy.

Practice Mindfulness

Spend a few minutes practicing mindfulness: sit quietly and focus on your breath, or do a body scan to release tension. Mindfulness can help you stay present and reduce stress.

Organize Your Space

Spend a few minutes tidying up your immediate surroundings. A clean and organized space can reduce feelings of chaos and improve your mental clarity. Start with your desk, a room, or any area that could use a quick declutter.

These are all quick fixes to help boost your mood and improve your mental health. If what you are dealing with requires more than some quick-fix exercises it may be time to discuss what you are feeling with a professional. We hope you feel empowered to protect and/or improve your mental health.  Also, if you feel as though you can benefit from a support group there is a list of support groups here that help to address issues such as grief, memory loss, depression, anxiety, and much more.
